What is happening with climate change

Climate change is a topic that has been progressing for ages, as it is affecting our world daily and getting progressively worse. From rising global temperatures and intensifying natural disasters to shifting ecosystems and public health concerns, the effects of climate change are becoming more visible and more urgent. What once seemed like a slow environmental shift is now a rapidly accelerating crisis that demands immediate attention.

This week, I am focusing on Earth’s climate change across the globe as extreme weather is becoming normal, from record hurricanes, extreme drought, intense winter storms, and massive wildfires. The reason why I chose to do a blog about climate change is that it is an important topic that I feel many are not aware of, or it is not taken seriously.

In a recent study by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA, 2025), the agency monitors weather worldwide and found that the temperature increased by about 2 degrees Fahrenheit (1.1 degrees Celsius).

Hurricanes have also been a global phenomenon that has become more powerful as the global temperatures have been rising, from which the storms get their energy from the warm ocean water. In an article from Earthjustice.org, How Climate Change is Fueling Extreme Weather(2025), Hurricane Helene, September 2024, caused historic flooding throughout the Southeast United States that caused 121 fatalities and left many without power. It is said that scientists are informing us that as our climate starts to get warm, the storms become stronger and more intense.

In a study by the United Nations, Causes and Effects of Climate Change(2024), it was stated that fossil fuels such as coal, oil, and gas are the largest contributors to global climate change, accounting for around 68% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Because of this, the gas emissions cover the Earth, which traps the sun’s heat, causing the planet to warm up, which causes climate change. The warmer temperature caused by this then creates a disturbance in the usual climate, which has risks for us on Earth.

One of the most alarming aspects of climate change is the concept of tipping points. These are thresholds that, once crossed, could trigger irreversible changes in Earth’s systems. For example, the melting of polar ice reduces the planet’s ability to reflect sunlight, accelerating warming. Similarly, thawing permafrost releases methane, a potent greenhouse gas, further intensifying the problem. Scientists warn that if these tipping points are reached, the consequences could be far more severe and difficult to reverse.

This decade is critical. The choices made today will determine the kind of world future generations inherit. Addressing climate change requires global cooperation, local action, and a commitment to long-term sustainability. While the challenge is immense, the opportunity to create a cleaner, healthier, and more equitable world has never been greater.
